When neither Connie nor Paul filled the silence after Jen paused, Bill spoke up. "Given the way this has all played out, we'd really like to stay the course with you. We understand your reluctance and the risk we'll be taking. Who knows what a lunatic like this Matthews guy's going to do?"

"I've tried to explain how dangerous that could be for you," Paul said, looking from Bill to Jen.

Bill nodded, a sober look coming over his face. "Yes, you did. Jen and I have discussed that. And we're basing this on the assumption that you plan to stay aboard Diamantista II yourselves. We get that you might not want to do that. If so, we wouldn't want to stand in your way by insisting that you continue with the charter. Not at all. I want to make that clear."

"We wondered if you were thinking about maybe disappearing until Matthews is caught," Jen said. "Nobody could blame you for that, and if that's the case, we wouldn't want to interfere."

Paul and Connie traded glances.

"You've put some thought into this," Paul said. "Connie and I believe our best choice is to see this through down here in the islands. Matthews has come right out and said that he intends to make Connie his next victim. Given my experience with him, hiding isn't a viable option. He's persistent, and he's not dumb, even though he's nuts. Money's not a problem for him, either; Matthews inherited a sizable fortune. He spared no expense in tracking down and cornering his other victims."

"You make it sound inevitable that he'll find you," Bill said.

"That's about the size of it," Paul said.

"Aren't you scared, Connie?" Jen asked. "I'd be terrified if I were you."

"Let's say I have a healthy respect for the danger he represents, but I don't scare easily. I've been through enough crap not to overreact to threats."

Jen frowned. "What do you mean? What kind of crap? This guy's threatening to kill you."

"Threats are one thing. Carrying them out successfully is something else. He'll have to square off with me face-to-face and get the upper hand before I worry too much." Connie's dark eyes flashed as she scowled, the muscles in her jaw twitching visibly. "He's not accustomed to people who see him for what he is. Matthews isn't the first person to mistake me for a victim."

Jen and Bill studied Connie for a moment. Bill looked at Paul and raised his eyebrows. Paul shrugged.

"You sound pretty sure of yourself," Bill said, looking at Connie. "Were you a cop, too? Is that how you two met?"

Connie laughed. "No. I made a career of avoiding cops. I was sort of on the run when I met Paul."

"Sounds like there's a story behind that," Bill said.

"Oooh! You told us you met in Ste. Anne, at the Davis's house," Jen said. "But did you arrest her, Paul?"

Paul smiled and shook his head. "No. We both happened to be at the Davis's house for dinner one night. A lot of the other people we've mentioned were there.
